Catherine Sandler

Catherine has worked in the field of leadership development for more than 25 years and is one of the UK’s most experienced executive coaches. She specialises in work with senior individuals at Board and Director level across the business and not-for-profit sectors. She has established a reputation as an exceptional practitioner who delivers first-class results for her clients and their organisations.

Catherine has taught at leading educational institutions including London Business School where she coached groups between 1993 and 2001. In 2000 she helped establish group coaching at INSEAD’s Global Leadership Centre and was a visiting teacher on its flagship programme, Coaching and Consulting for Change. She has also been a tutor, consultant and PhD supervisor at the Tavistock Clinic in London. Her own doctorate is from Oxford University. She is a qualified counsellor with a Diploma in Counselling from Regent’s College, London.

In 2011 Catherine’s book Executive Coaching: A Psychodynamic Approach was published by McGraw-Hill (Open University Press). It is recommended reading on most coaching training programmes and has attracted interest from coaches in the UK and abroad. In 2016 it was translated into Mandarin for the growing Chinese market and Catherine regularly runs coaching training programmes in Shanghai and Beijing.

Catherine has also written articles for a wide range of professional journals on topics including the emotional role of the leader in turbulent times, coaching leaders under pressure and tackling bullying at work. She speaks regularly on coaching-related topics at conferences, business schools and training courses and runs coaching masterclasses for other coaches and allied professionals in the UK and abroad. She has been interviewed for features on leadership and executive stress in the Financial Times and the Times.

A powerful combination of psychological expertise and business insight sets Catherine’s coaching apart. She uses her deep understanding of individual and group dynamics to help clients achieve tangible results and make helpful behavioural changes. She draws on a range of developmental tools, including 360 degree feedback, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) and her own model, the Emotional Profiles Triangle™. Catherine has enabled many clients to transform their leadership through addressing longstanding patterns that were hindering their effectiveness.

Catherine is also a certified Action Learning Coach with the World Institute for Action Learning (WIAL) and uses this simple but exceptionally effective model to transform team dynamics and performance and develop leadership skills within client organisations.

Catherine has extensive experience of working with senior and high-potential women. In 2008 she launched Sandler Consulting’s Senior Women’s Impact Programme, which uses a small-group format to help women enhance their influencing skills, build resilience and increase their leadership presence. She is in demand as a speaker and commentator in this area.

As well as working with executives, Catherine enjoys working with entrepreneurs. She has helped many fast-growing SMEs to develop the management and strategic skills they need when making the transition from a small, organic business to a larger, more complex company or partnership.
