Coaching Masterclass

  • Catherine Sandler regularly runs a masterclass based on her book Executive Coaching: A Psychodynamic Approach (Open University Press, 2011) which is recommended reading for this event.
  • The one-day interactive workshop is designed for coaches and allied professionals who are keen to learn more about the psychodynamic model and its application to client work. Feedback scores from participants at the last three events have averaged 9/10.
  • At the masterclass, Catherine provides a clear and concise introduction to key psychodynamic concepts including the unconscious mind, psychological defence mechanisms and transference and counter-transference.
  • She also explains and illustrates her own model, the Emotional Profiles Triangle™ which outlines three leadership styles and links them to three different ways of responding to stress and perceived threats. This model has received an extremely positive response in the UK and abroad and is found of particular value by a growing number of coaches.
  • Participants in the masterclass are helped to:
    • Understand their client in greater depth, taking into account thoughts and emotions that may lie outside conscious awareness
    • Identify the client's characteristic psychological and behavioural patterns using data from multiple sources, including how they relate to the coach and the coaching process
    • Become more sensitive to the client’s potential mixed emotions on first meeting and more skilful at building trust and rapidly engaging them in the coaching process
    • Develop proactive, practical techniques to encourage the client to master new skills and achieve behavioural change
    • Learn how to use the Emotional Profiles Triangle™ to help clients understand their typical responses to pressure and manage them more effectively
    • Consider the client’s broader context and manage the executive coach’s dual accountability to both individual and organisation
  • During the workshop, Catherine draws on her own case-material to illustrate how these goals can be achieved and also engages with participants' examples of client work.
  • Numbers at each masterclass are limited so early booking is advisable.
  • A Continued Professional Development certificate is available to those attending the event.

  • The Emotional Profiles Triangle was particularly useful. Everyone has the potential to become more effective by identifying their behaviour under pressure and learning to anticipate it and adopt more effective alternatives. If you don’t know what to work on, work on this! If we include this goal in our coaching, the overall impact will be more valuable and sustainable.

  • I feel like I’ve given myself permission to use the concept and approach of psychodynamics more explicitly in my coaching – in fact I used it with a coachee yesterday and the feedback was entirely positive.

  • Huge amount of experience to draw on; open, easy discussion; interesting mix of theory and practice. I enjoyed that fact that there was some ‘push back’ – ideas/approaches were challenged which I think was very useful. It was a full day but I didn’t feel overwhelmed by the material.

  • I have already been using the thinking at the masterclass to re-evaluate each of my existing clients...I also used it when supervising a coach to encourage her to look deeper.

  • The content was superb, and Catherine’s style is wonderfully inclusive and informative at the same time.

  • The event has helped me to think much more deeply about myself as a consultant and coach and the dynamics at play between me and my clients.

  • A fabulous course, really valuable learning and great to hear so many case-studies and examples. Thank you!

  • I felt utterly energised at the end, teeming with thoughts and ideas. Thank you for a very inspiring day.

  • Good balance of discussion with lots of real examples of the techniques in practice.

  • A very professional, engaging day. Much generosity from Catherine in sharing her experience and insights.

  • Very useful input and great to have the concepts brought to life. I particularly liked the case study discussion.

  • I had some anxiety about my level of experience versus others but Catherine created a really safe environment and encouraged all of us to contribute.

  • I gained most insight about myself and my abilities!

  • Thank you for an insightful and exceptionally rewarding day.

  • Wealth of sharp observations from Catherine expressed with clarity and grace.

  • Very illuminating case studies and the chance to bring one’s own cases.

  • The event completely exceeded my expectations. I had been concerned about not having formal coaching training but I quickly felt that Catherine does not place all of the emphasis on specific experience or qualifications but values too the insight one can bring.

  • Catherine's breadth of knowledge and experience in the coaching field came over clearly in the 'masterclass'. When giving participants feedback, she was direct but very encouraging. I gained some important insights into my own coaching style and which steps I need to take to improve.
