Coaching Supervision

Supervision for Executive Coaches

  • According to recent research into best practice in the executive coaching field, supervision is regarded as important or essential by a large majority of coaches but is still only used by a minority. One reason for this is a shortage of suitably experienced and competent supervisors.
  • Catherine Sandler over 17 years' experience as an individual and group supervisor of executive coaches. She is one of only 9 coaches in the UK invited to become a Founding Accredited Supervisor members of APECS (Association for Professional Executive Coaching and Supervision). Catherine has also supervised on the Tavistock Clinic's MA in Consultation and the Organisation and on its PhD programme.
  • Catherine has written a chapter on her approach to coaching supervision in
    Coaching and Mentoring Supervision: Theory and Practice editors T. Bachkirova, P. Jackson & D. Clutterbuck (published in 2011 by Open University Press).
  • Catherine's practice as a supervisor reflects her work as a coach and is therefore characterised by insight, rigour and warmth. Her aims are to help the coaches she supervises to:
    • Deliver a consistently high standard of coaching and professionalism.
    • Adhere to a relevant code of ethical behaviour (such as that of APECS).
    • Understand the limits of their competence and know when and how to refer their clients to other professionals where appropriate.
    • Develop their capacity to make sense of the client's organisational and internal worlds by drawing on multiple conceptual frameworks.
    • Review and work to improve their coaching technique.
    • Deepen self-awareness, gain insight into strengths and weaknesses and address any blind-spots that may be limiting the impact of their work.
  • In addressing these aims, Catherine draws on her own wealth of experience in the field. While discussion will focus mainly on the clients being presented, she will keep the coach's own development needs and profile very much in mind.
  • Please note that Catherine is currently able to devote only a limited amount of time to coaching supervision.
